NY1 For You: Ongoing Construction Demolishes Quality Of Life For Brooklyn Renters

New Yorkers are no strangers to the city's ongoing construction projects, but one resident in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn says the noise and pollution coming from a project next door has him stressed and sleep-deprived. NY1's Susan Jhun filed the following report.

Right outside Ernesto Seman's apartment window in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn is a noisy city construction project that was supposed to have halted years ago.

"Two years became five and they said that they are going to take one more year, so it's no longer a disruption, it's a constant," says Seman.

The apartment's renters, who are expecting a baby, say the disruptions start as early as 6 a.m. and go as late as 6 p.m.

"You can just close the window and see all the dust coming," says Seman. "And you have the building shaking each time they have to break some big piece of concrete. And it's not like it happens occasionally, it happens every day."

What makes this even worse is that Seman says he believes there is no actual work being done at the site.

"This is just a dumping yard," says Seman.

NY1 confirmed that with its cameras, which witnessed trucks coming in and out simply carrying materials offsite.

The station contacted the City Department of Design and Construction and a spokesman confirms there is no actual construction being done at the site. He admits there have been lengthy delays in the work to improve the sewers and water mains on Columbia Street, but says it is winding down and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The spokesman also says the agency will monitor the noise levels on-site and take measures to reduce the amount of dust.

Seman hopes that action will make life next to the site more bearable.
