West Villagers said goodbye Tuesday to a Sept. 11 tribute featuring memorial tiles.

Residents were treated to food, drinks and a free concert paying tribute to the memorial, which began going up in the days and weeks after the attacks.

The tiles are being moved into storage at the New York State Museum in Albany to make way for an MTA ventilation plant.

After a struggle to keep the memorial in the neighborhood, its supporters are disappointed.

"I think it's a huge mistake," said one.

"It's really heartbreaking," said a second. "I found it to be a very beautiful and moving memorial. This is why I'm here."

"I am sitting here by myself without one politician that cares about these tiles and I have to ask the mayor of the city of New York why that beautiful corner is out after the 16th," said Paul McClure, the artistic director of Artists Who Care. "It's a travesty and it's a shame."

Some community members wanted the memorial moved to 62 Greenwich Street but they haven't been able to raise the money needed, so the tiles have to be stored.

Tile removal begins Sunday.
