WTC Tribute Lights Up Manhattan Skyline

Two twin beams of light shined in the night sky Tuesday night, reminding New Yorkers of the towers that once stood in their place. NY1's Michael Herzenberg filed the following report.

They're just lights but they mean so much more.

88 lights, 7,000 watts each, remind people up to 60 miles away of the Twin Towers.

Many came to viewing locations across the city to take pictures.

Some came in solitude but more than a dozen people held an inter-faith peace walk, joining the Brooklyn Heights Clergy Association for a vigil on the promenade.

"My step-son lost his dad on 9/11," said Tom Martinez of the All Souls Bethlehem Church. "It's a reminder of a terrible day where a lot of people lost their lives."

The Tribute in Light began six months after the attacks on 9/11. At sundown on each anniversary since, the lights go up and many say the tradition must continue for the living and the dead.

"That they're not forgotten and it's kinda cool cause it goes kinda straight to heaven," said one. "It depends on what you believe. It's like 'hey we're still here and we still remember you.'"

"It's pretty sad," said another. "May all of them rest in peace."
