In honor of the National Day of Service and Remembrance marking Sept. 11, volunteers from Habitat for Humanity NYC are giving families the gift of a new home.

Habitat is continuing the "100 Homes in Brooklyn" project for working families in Central Brooklyn.

The goal is to build affordable housing throughout the city, with help from federal and city funds.

The project also eliminates urban blight by restoring long-vacant buildings.

Future residents put in up to 200 hours of work on the homes they'll live in.

Volunteers say it's rewarding to work alongside the families they are helping.

"A lot of people talk about Habitat and they say 'well, how many people can it really help?'" said actress Emily Bergl. "100 New York families are going to be helped by Habitat. They're going to have homes that they're going to own themselves."
