App Wrap: "Inrix Traffic," "iExit"

NY1 highlights the coolest and newest apps for your cell phone or mobile device in the twice-weekly segment “App Wrap.” NY1’s Adam Balkin filed the following report.

Inrix Traffic

With so many free GPS driving apps available, what could make anyone switch to a new app? The "Inrix Traffic" app is intriguing because it's all about the traffic — not just the traffic that's out on the roads right now, but it also tries to predict the traffic several hours in advance.

Developers say the predictions are based on factors that could slow a commute, like accidents, construction and police activity, coupled with lots and lots of historical data on congested specific roads during any hour of any day.

The app lets users input a route, and then it says who long it will take. Then scroll a section at the top to adjust the start time and the app will show if it might make more sense to wait an hour or two or several to avoid gridlock.

"Inrix Traffic" is a free app for iOS, Android, Blackberry and Windows phones. An in-app premium upgrade for $24.99 adds certain features like access to live traffic cameras.

iExit

Drivers on the road can use "iExit," an app that tells what to expect at upcoming exits on the Interstate, such as gas stations, food stops, hotels and shopping centers. It then offers quick, one-touch dialing to those establishments.

While the lite version is free, an upgrade to the full version for 99 cents lets users pick their favorite types of places. Someone who likes Cracker Barrel restaurants can then see only exits that have Cracker Barrels, or receive an alert when he or she is approaching an exit with a Cracker Barrel.

It can also show which upcoming exits are offering promotions or sales.

"iExit" is an iOS-only app that has a free lite version and a 99-cent version with all the features.
