NY1 VIDEO: 30 years after Governor Nelson Rockefeller abolished the death penalty in New York, Gov. George Pataki signed it back into law. The order took effect on September 1, 1995. NY1's Michael O'Looney filed the following report on that day.

NY1 FOLLOW-UP: Despite Gov. Pataki's legislation, no inmate has been executed in New York State since 1963. Nine years after capital punishment was reinstated, New York State's highest court declared it unconstitutional. Three years after that, the last death sentence in the state was commuted. There are currently no inmates in New York on death row.
