Mets To Shut Down Santana For Rest Of Season
Updated: 08/22/2012 06:22 PM

Johan Santana's season is over.

Santana threw the first no-hitter in Mets history on June 1 but it's been all downhill for him since then. The former Cy Young winner lost each of his last five starts with an ERA of 15.63. He also spent time on the disabled list with a sprained ankle.

Now, he is going back on the disabled list after his back stiffened following a routine bullpen session earlier this week and an MRI revealed damage.

He will not need surgery but the Mets will shut him down for the rest of the season to prevent any further injury.

The Mets are recalling Collin McHugh from the minors to take Santana's spot. He will make his major major league debut Thursday.
