Taking an Advanced Placement exam just got less expensive for many high school students, thanks to a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
New York State received more than $1.6 million of funding from the Education Department's Advanced Placement Test Fee Program Wednesday.
The grants are expected to pay up to $38 for each exam for as many as three exams per student.
Officials hope the grant will encourage more low-income students to take the college-level tests.
Scoring well on the exams often allows students to earn college credit while in high school, shortening the time it takes to earn a degree.
