As the campaign for president heats up, both candidates are getting with the times, unveiling their own mobile apps, one of which promises to break some big news to you even before the media hears about it. NY1's Adam Balkin filed the following report.

Last presidential election, candidates were hi-tech if they spread their messages via Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. This time around, add apps to that list. Both Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama each launched new mobile apps.

Mitt's VP
Romney's is called "Mitt's VP." At the moment, it is quite simply the way the Republican nominee says he'll break the news of who his running mate will be.

When you click on the VP tab, there's simply a Coming Soon message that promises if you set up notifications for the app, it'll tell you who Romney picks as his running mate even before the press knows who Romney has chosen. Aside from that, it allows you to follow the campaign's official Twitter feed and also gives a one-click way to donate to the campaign.

"Mitt's VP" is out now for free for iOS and Android devices.

Obama For America
It probably comes as little surprise that President Obama, often viewed as one of the most tech savvy members of our government, is also out with an app, an app with quite a bit more functionality. It's called "Obama for America."

First, there's the info tab with info on where the president stands and actions he has taken on campaign issues. You can also get the latest campaign news through the app, including Twitter feeds. There's also an events tab for showing you campaign-related happenings in your area. An action button turns you into an instant member of Obama's campaign workforce, giving you tools to register voters, join a volunteer team in your neighborhood or give you some tools to canvas your area and talk to local voters. Like Romney's app, Obama's app has a quick and easy section for donating to the campaign.

"Obama for America" is also a free app, though it is currently only for iOS devices. An Android version is coming soon.
