NY1 VIDEO: On July 31, 1997, the NYPD acted on a tip, raided a Brooklyn apartment and thwarted a plot to bomb the Atlantic Avenue subway station. Officers arrested two men that day, both Palestinian immigrants with Jordanian passports, whose home contained at least five homemade pipe bombs. NY1's Aram Roston filed this report on the day of the raid.

NY1 FOLLOW-UP: Nearly a year after the two conspirators were arrested, a Brooklyn jury convicted each for their crimes. Gazi Ibrahim Abu Mezer was found guilty on all three counts against him, which included threatening to use a weapon of mass destruction. Lafi Kalil was acquitted of all terrorism-related charges, but convicted of having fake immigration documentation. He was sentenced to three years. Abu Mezer was sentenced to life in prison.
