New York is a gold medalist when it comes to Olympic participation, as 35 athletes from the state prepare to represent Team USA in London.

Eight of the 35 are from the city, including swimmer Lia Neal from Brooklyn and gymnast John Orozco from the Bronx.

Five members of the fencing team also call the city home.

Team USA has more than 500 athletes and this is the first time women outnumber men on the team.

The games start on July 27.
