NY1 highlights the coolest and newest apps for your cell phone or mobile device in the twice-weekly segment “App Wrap.” NY1’s Adam Balkin filed the following report.

Sun Exposure

While no one should really stay out in direct summer sun too long, and certainly not without sun protection, the mobile app "Sun Exposure" by Wolfram Alpha details for users exactly how long they can be out before their skin turns toasty.

The app either finds the user's locations or lets the user put one in, and asks what time of the day the user will be outside and the user's approximate skin type. The app then says how long the user can be outside before getting a sunburn, depending on whether the user has no sun protection or is wearing an SPF of 15, 30 and 45.

It also predicts the UV index and tells sun position, plus sunrise and sunset times.

"Sun Exposure" is an iOS app for 99 cents.

State Of The Air

A similar app is designed to tell on hot summer days when to step inside because the air is becoming less safe to breathe. Put out by the American Lung Association, it's called "State Of The Air."

Users can either let the app find their location or they can input their location. The app then serves up ozone and particulate information on the day, along with a color to indicate how safe that number is. Green is the safest color and red is most dangerous. Tap the number for more information.

The app also offers to put the user on email lists to stay up-to-date on air quality issues and gives a one-touch button to contact lawmakers in order to voice concerns about air quality.

"State Of The Air" is a free app for iOS and Android devices.
