NY1 VIDEO: In June of 1995, preservationists were fighting to save the Aquacade. A highlight of the 1939 World's Fair, it fell into disrepair in the decades that followed. NY1's Kristen Shaughnessy filed the following report.

NY1 FOLLOW-UP: The Aquacade was demolished in 1996. The site is now home to a boardwalk plaza and snack bar constructed using elements from the Aquacade.
It would be more than a decade before the park would get a new pool.

After years of stalled plans, in February of 2008, the Flushing Meadows Corona Park Aquatic Center opened to visitors. The $66 million complex features a diving pool and an adjustable floor for public swimming and competitive meets, as well as an ice skating rink.
