NY1 VIDEO: As NY1 revisits its 20-year history, the station looks back at reporter Josh Robin's June 8, 2009 coverage of a political coup in Albany as Republican members of the State Senate re-took the chamber with the help of two Democrats and, as a result, brought the state legislature to a standstill.

NY1 FOLLOW-UP: The defections brought the senate to a standstill for more than a month - although both men ultimately rejoined their party. But the Democrats' hold on the chamber wouldn't last long. Senate Republicans would re-gain control again in the 2010 elections.

As for the two Senators at the center of the coup, Espada would lose his re-election battle - and he was convicted last month of stealing from the not-for profit health care clinic he founded.

He's now awaiting a re-trial on several other charges.

The senate would vote to kick out Monserrate after he was convicted of misdemeanor assault on his girlfriend.

Last month, he pleaded guilty to conspiracy and mail fraud charges and is awaiting sentencing.
