NY1 For You: Dark Era For Queens Footbridge Is Now Over

A pitch-dark footbridge had some Queens commuters fearing for their safety, until they called NY1 For You and the station shed some light on the situation. NY1's Susan Jhun filed a follow-up report.

It's night and day when it comes to commuters traveling over a footbridge in Rego Park, Queens.

"There's no more chaos and nobody feels unsafe," said resident Mark Redlefsen.

Last week, NY1 For You first reported on the pitch-black footbridge over the Long Island Rail Road where all the lights had been out for a month.

"When it's a dark night you cannot see a thing on this bridge. It is complete blackness," said resident Joe Austin.

"Bottom line, it's a public safety issue. You have elderly, you have children coming through here," said Redlefsen.

Residents called 311 repeatedly with no results. After they contacted NY1 For You, the station called the Department of Transportation and shed some light on the dark situation.

"Lights were on the next day, in the daytime, throughout the night. It was a perfect 24-hour turnaround," said Redlefsen.

"Thanks to Channel 1, we have light," said resident Lili Friedman.
