NY1 VIDEO: As NY1 News revisits its 20-year history, the station looks back at reporter Jay Dow's May 7, 2001 story on the controversy surrounding the prominent Hale House charity after a deal was struck to remove the founder's daughter after financial and other irregularity allegations surfaced.

NY1 FOLLOW-UP: Lorraine Hale and her husband would ultimately plead guilty; her for stealing from the charity, him for setting up a checking account for the cash. Both got probation and were ordered to pay more than $700,000 in restitution. In the years since, Hale House's board has worked to rebuild the nonprofit's reputation and weather the economic downturn. Today Hale House operates a daycare and preschool and offers transitional housing for homeless families. The nonprofit is also hoping to open a second preschool location in the area in the future.
