Taking leadership to a whole different level, the latest HealthPlus Amerigroup/NY1 Scholar Athlete is a role model for her fellow students in many different ways. NY1's Jon Weinstein filed the following report.

Emma Almon is a difference maker at Hunter College High School. It's not just in the classroom and on the field, but as the president of the student government she's instrumental to the functioning of the entire school.

"I always have somewhere to be, and I always have something to do and I think if you see me and I'm a little out of breath that that's just me running by to do my next thing," says Emma.

In her role as president, Emma's constantly meeting with the school's administration, organizing charity events and helping to facilitate dialogue among her fellow students.

"She ran unopposed for president of the student body and there's a reason for that, no one could imagine anyone else being the President of the student body this year," says Hunter College High School Principal Tony Fisher.

Emma's an "A" student and her leadership role extends into the classroom.

"Emma has her hand up pretty much every time I ask a question, sometimes before I'm finished asking the question, she has super intelligent answers all the time, she is a very deep thinker, she's just marvelous," says English teacher Daniel Mozes.

As if studying and basically running the school weren't enough, Emma plays three sports at Hunter: Volleyball, basketball and lacrosse. On top of that, she says her best sport is soccer which she plays year-round on a club team.

"She's intense, she's intense. She takes what she does seriously and she works hard at it," says lacrosse coach Ray Basso.

"The physical fatigue is nothing compared to the rewards that I get out of it," Emma says. "So working with a team, having coach's support, having my friends come out and see me play, these are all unforgettable things that you know are worth the temporary pain."

Emma's work in student government is actually the inspiration for her major. She's planning on studying international relations at the University of Chicago next fall.

"I'm very interested in how people and states work at different levels and how it translates into action," says Emma.

"She will not only do amazing things, she'll do amazing things with grace and good heart and she's going to make the world a so much better place," says Emma's principal, Tony.

So, for making an impact on every level at her high school, Emma Almon is the latest Amerigroup Health Plus/NY1 Scholar Athlete of the Week.
