One of the last physical remnants of the September 11th attacks is moving out of Lower Manhattan.

The Fritz Koenig sculpture known as "The Sphere" has been a fixture at Battery Park since 2002.

It originally sat in the plaza between the original World Trade Center towers, and during the 9/11 terror attacks it survived the falling and burning debris virtually intact.

Officials say it will likely be moved to a hangar at Kennedy Airport to make way for a a renovation project.

One 9/11 family member says it's outrageous to consider moving what he calls a symbol of endurance and unity in the period following the attacks.

"It speaks to the perseverance of the values attacked," says Michael Burke, who lost a brother in the 9/11 attacks. "It's a symbol of word peace and cooperation in response to terrorism."

An online petition has been started to have the sculpture added to the 9/11 memorial.

"The Sphere" was completed in 1971, in time for the dedication of the original World Trade Center towers.
