NY1 highlights the coolest and newest apps for your cell phone or mobile device in the twice-weekly segment “App Wrap.” NY1’s Adam Balkin filed the following report.

OnLive Desktop

OnLive's new desktop app allows your iPad or Android tablet to work just like a PC, with Microsoft office tools, flash and all. How it's able to do that, you're actually using a virtual PC so just like you'd stream a movie from Netflix that isn't saved on your device you are streaming access to a PC stored on OnLive's servers which means any documents you create will also be saved there, in the so called cloud. All this also means you will have to be connected to the Internet for it to work. The OnLive Desktop app has a free version for iPads and Android tablets, that comes with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Reader plus 2GB of storage. If you want the ability to surf the web through Internet Explorer and have access to flash content that'll cost $4.99 a month. That also gets you priority when you log on. If there aren't enough virtual PCs on the web for free users they'll have to wait for one to open up, whereas you get bumped to the front of the line. And a pro version for $9.99 a month is coming soon with 50GB of storage and the ability to download other software, including high-end PC games.

ArtMail

To take a step back to the old way of doing things with your mobile device there's ArtMail. It allows you to actually write with your hand, letters to people to send as email. There are a few apps that allow this but this one is nice because you don't have to squeeze your words into the page in proper proportions. You write each word full screen and then the app automatically places it neatly onto the page for you. Plus you write with a nice brush to make even sloppy handwriting look sorta artsy. There are also lots of options for stationary. And perhaps the best motivation of all to get people to at least try to get back into the habit of writing instead of typing letters, ArtMail for iPads is free.
