Paul Scrocco: Accomplished Lineman Sets Up Helpful Career Path

The latest Health Plus/NY1 Scholar Athlete is a star lineman on the gridiron who's also known for his community building work off the field. NY1's Jon Weinstein filed the following report.

Paul Scrocco is a prototypical offensive lineman, his size and skill made him three-year starter at Curtis High School, one of the city's powerhouse programs.

"This off-season I worked extremely hard to get where I am, I really wanted to have a good year, and you just gotta put work into, and on the field I stayed focused, stayed calm, and did what I had to do," says Paul.

Paul was a team captain this year and his leadership extends off the field.

"His leadership was by example, everything he did, he never missed a practice, was always dressed the right way and everything Paul did was by example," says Paul's football coach, Peter Gambardella.

Teachers and coaches say his biggest achievement might just be starting a Stress Management program to mentor Junior Varsity football players having difficulty adapting to high school.

"Being on the football team, you know it's very stressful to manage your time between school and the sport. And I saw the JV team, a lot of the guys were having trouble with that, so I figured if I can help them, help them in the future to be able to deal with their time between work, school work and football," recalls Paul.

"He's really just a very giving person, very concerned about his fellow students, his peers, about the school in general," says Paul's English teacher, Sean Cogan.

While he's often focusing on others, he never forgets the importance of his academics. He's an A plus student in Curtis' rigorous, college level, International Baccalaureate Program.

"It's not just whether he gets a diploma, it's that he was able to get through this program and still do all the other things. That in and of itself is a coup that will last him," says IB Program Coordinator Margarita Fernandez.

Paul isn't sure where he's going to college yet, but he does know he wants to play football when he gets there. He also knows he wants to study physical therapy.

"I like helping people, you know? I was always into when you get an injury how you rehab from it, and I feel like being a physical therapist, that's your main job," says Paul.

So, for dominating on the football field and being a valued member of the community, Paul Scrocco is the latest Health Plus/NY1 Scholar Athlete of the Week.
