The latest Scholar Athlete of the Week is making her mark in three sports and the classroom. NY1's Jon Weinstein filed the following report.
Richmond Hill High School's Marfray Hernandez says she's motivated to succeed every day by one special person in her life.
"My mom, she's a single mother, she does a lot work, a lot of bills, time isn't easy right now and she inspires me, she's my Wonder Woman," says Marfray.
Marfray is undoubtedly making her mother proud. Her favorite class is "leadership" where her teacher says she's almost always the first to raise her hand and participate. Even in a class full of the school's best, she stands out.
"She just stands up for what she believes in, and I must say shes very outspoken and I've been very enamored with her behavior and the way she interacts with the class and the way she presents herself," says Carinne Hackshaw, Marfray's leadership teacher.
It's clear these qualities come naturally to Marfray, she's the captain of three separate sports teams: Bowling in the Fall, basketball in the winter and softball in the spring. She's constantly encouraging and motivating her teammates.
"Easy to get along with, the kids respect her because she's a good athlete, and like I said if there's a problem arising she nips it in the bud, she's been great," says Robert Kushnick, Marfray's bowling and softball coach.
"You have captains that are rude and obnoxious, not me. I'm down to earth with my teammates, I joke around and then there's a time and place to get serious and they know that," says Marfray.
Marfray also contributed to her family's income by working a part time job. She worked as an intern with the Queens district attorney's office. She's also a member of the National Honor Society and the Key Club.
"Key Club it's with the kids that want to help out the community and the school which is great because you don't get that a lot nowadays, you get kids that just want to go home and hang out, but not me," explains Marfray.
Marfray is hoping to attend SUNY Purchase next fall and she'll be putting that effervescent personality to good use as she's going to be studying acting as well as psychology.
"Psychology I like to know what people are thinking, I like how the brain works. And acting, I like being in front of the camera, I like entertaining people," says Marfray.
So, for working hard every day to accomplish her ambitious goals, Marfray Hernandez is the latest Health Plus/NY1 Scholar Athlete of the Week.
