The competition wrapped up Sunday at the 20th annual FIRST Robotics competition.

Teams from more than 60 high schools around the world faced off at the Jacob Javits Center.

Students had six weeks to build robots using a standard "kit of parts" and set rules.

"I think more than ever you have a major need for this,” said NYC FIRST Regional Director Pat Daly. “It's a spark. It teaches kids this can be fun."

The winner is determined by which device can most quickly pick up and hang inflated tubes.

"We're not really worried about the score. We're worried about getting this robot to run perfectly, and trying to win,” said Paul Mangels of the Mechanical Marauders, Team 271.

"I mean it was constant work and it's very fun,” said Aimee Tavares of the Harlem Knights, Team 1160. “The whole team gets along. We have fun and work together."

NY1's parent company, Time Warner Cable is sponsoring the event as part of its "Connect a Million Minds" initiative. It supports school programs that boost learning in science, technology, engineering, and math.
