City restaurants will soon be required to post informational posters about the eight foods that cause the most allergic reactions, including shellfish, peanuts and wheat.

The posters will have to be in a place where food servers and kitchen staff can view them.

The City Council approved the measure on Thursday.

"Thousands upon thousands of people sit down for meals and services every day. And we want to make sure that when they go to these world's greatest restaurants, they have a confidence about issues related to food allergies, which are very significant health issues for some New Yorkers," said City Council Speaker Christine Quinn.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg has also expressed support for the bill.
