A Queens community rallied in support of the Willets Point redevelopment plan at City Hall Thursday, just days after city council members said it will be shot down.
Advocates said they will continue to push the plan to transform the iron triangle of auto body shops into a mixed-use area. They said the plan would create affordable housing, schools, retail hotels and possibly a convention center.
"It's going to turn a place that is really been deserted practically, except for very crude kind of business enterprises, automobile-related and such,” said Queens Borough President Helen Marshall. “And we are going to turn in into a livable, wonderful community where people live."
Earlier this week, a majority of City Council members told the mayor they would block the Willets Point development plan because they said there is no guarantee jobs would be available for displaced workers.
