1837...Charles Lewis Tiffany opens his jewelry store on lower Broadway with $1,000 borrowed from his father. In its first week, the store racks up a profit of 33 cents.

1851...The New York Times publishes its inaugural issue. Before adopting its present name, the paper is known as the "New York Daily Times."
