The owner of legendary Manhattan rock club CBGB's is dead.

His son says Hilly Kristal, 75, died yesterday at Cabrini Hospital in Manhattan from complications related to lung cancer.

Kristal opened the famed rock club in the East Village in 1973, and ran it until a bitter rent battle forced the club to close last fall.

CBGB's became a worldwide symbol for punk rock and a launch pad for many legendary groups.

Kristal had plans to open a CBGB's branch in Las Vegas.
