1822...Yellow Fever breaks out near Rector Street, causing a mass evacuation uptown to Greenwich Village. The move speeds development of the soon-to-be fashionable area.

1885...The disassembled Statue of Liberty arrives in New York from France in 300 pieces. The completed monument is dedicated the following year.

1994...More than 2 million Rangers fans, both new and old, line lower Broadway for a ticker-tape parade in honor of the team's first Stanley Cup championship in 54 years.

Today's New Yorker birthdays include singer Barry Manilow, born in Brooklyn in 1943.
