Connecticut Senator Joseph Lieberman brought his high profile re-election campaign to the heart of New York. Political reporter Rita Nissan filed the following report.
He's running for re-election in Connecticut, but Senator Joseph Lieberman brought his campaign to Grand Central Terminal, during the Tuesday evening rush hour.
“We have a lot of people from Connecticut who work in New York and we wanted to greet them as they go back,” said Lieberman.
At his side was a politician well known to New Yorkers, former Mayor Ed Koch.
“I think the senator is one of the greatest senators we've ever had in the Senate,” said Koch.
Lieberman is trying to win re-election as an independent after losing the Democratic primary to Ned Lamont.
Lamont, a cable TV millionaire is using his personal fortune to fund his campaign. He went from political neophyte to Democratic nominee, largely due to his opposition to the Iraq war.
Lieberman is a strong supporter of the war and perceived by Democratic critics as too close to President George W. Bush.
Now, in the general election that stance his helping him. The most recent poll shows Lieberman with a 10-point lead over Lamont. In part, thanks to support from Republicans.
“I believe he has the best interest of the country. I may not always agree with him, but I believe he has the best interest of the country in what he stands for,” said one Lieberman fan.
But he's loathed by many liberals.
“I hope he loses. He has turned his coat on the people of Connecticut. He's for a war that nobody supports. He's arrogant and he needs to go,” said a detractor.
Many high profile Democrats have abandoned Lieberman, including Democrats considering running for president in two years, like New York's junior senator, Hillary Clinton.
“It's disappointing, but it's politics so I move on,” said Lieberman.
He just hopes politics doesn't get in the way of him capturing a fourth term.
