It's a haven for culture, history, dining and world class theatre. So what else is new? No, not New York, New Haven.

Just 90 miles from New York City, New Haven, Connecticut sprouts spires reminiscent of Prague, and sits comfortably in the shadow of a rock formation of the sleeping giant on one side and Long Island sound on another.

These days, this harbor front city is awakening from its slumber, receiving high marks not only for its most venerated occupant, Yale University. It's an easy day trip, but with so much to see, head first to the tourist office at the corner of College and Chapel streets right off the Green.

Thanks to the collegiate atmosphere, this centuries-old city has a very young vibe. Bring your future Yalies with you and make your first stop the Peabody Museum of Natural History to meet the city's oldest and newest resident, the 66 million year old Torosaurus. Like Washington D.C., most of the museums are free but you don't even need to step foot inside to view the varying displays of architecture. Free walking tours of Yale are held daily as are tours of Grove Street cemetery where you can visit the graves of some of Yale's most illustrious graduates.

New Haven has become a proving ground for Broadway with its very own Shubert Theatre and the Yale Rep has a reputation for avant garde productions. Connecticut artists get their very own space and in October, hundreds of studios open to the public. From one palette to another, foodies will find hundreds of restaurants to tempt the taste buds.
