The cab driver who caused a multi-vehicle accident at one of the busiest intersections in the city has opened his eyes and is talking for the first time since the crash.

According to published reports, the driver, Zia Syed, regained consciousness and expressed concern for the other people injured in the accident, near the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan. He said he thinks there may have been something wrong with his cab.

The Daily News says police don't expect to file criminal charges against Syed. Investigators believe he may have mistakenly stepped on the gas instead of the brake.

On Monday, according to police, his taxi rear-ended a station wagon, pushing it onto the sidewalk, where it hit a pedestrian. The cab continued down the street, striking several other cabs and two min buses.

Nearly a dozen people were hospitalized. The most seriously hurt were Syed, who had to be cut out of the cab, and his passenger, a pregnant woman who later gave birth by emergency Cesarean.
