A Manhattan teenager was arrested Wednesday and charged with killing her newborn baby.
Police say Sharice Patterson, who recently turned 18, gave birth in her bedroom in January, then left the baby girl inside her closet, where the infant suffocated. The next morning, Patterson allegedly wrapped the baby in a bag and brought the child to St. Luke's Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Patterson pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges of criminally negligent homicide and endangering the welfare of a child.
In New York City, mothers and fathers are allowed to drop off their newborn babies at any hospital, firehouse or police station, no questions asked.
You can also call a toll-free hotline which is staffed 24/7 for emergency assistance. The hotline number is 1-877-796-HOPE.
