Mayor Michel Bloomberg on Wednesday announced a pilot program involving 253 security officers in 31 Midtown buildings. The Police Department will train the officers to respond to terrorism, to direct evacuations and to coordinate efforts with local police, fire and emergency personnel.
“The people that work in these buildings are organized and well-led, and there’s somebody that speaks for them,” the mayor said. “They have a union which is interested in training for the future. That’s why their jobs keep getting better — because they aren’t just saying we’re only going to do the old stuff; they’re always willing to take on more responsibility as the world changes.”
The cost of the program is being shared by the security workers’ union and the Realty Advisory Board, a group that represents management.
