Mourners are gathering in Brooklyn Tuesday to pay their last respects to Mary Pinkett, the city's first black councilwoman.
Pinkett lost her battle with cancer last Thursday.
She served her Brooklyn district for 28 years before term limits forced her out of office in 2001.
A wake will be held at Medgar Evers College Tuesday from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m., with funeral services to follow. Mayor Michael Bloomberg is expected to speak at the funeral service.
A private burial is set for Wednesday.
Pinkett was 77.
