1973...As gas supplies run low in the wake of an Arab oil embargo, the NYPD is forced to drastically cut the number of patrol cars in most precincts.

1979...Composer Richard Rodgers dies at his home in Manhattan at age 77. His works include the iconic Broadway shows "Oklahoma," "South Pacific" and "The Sound of Music."
