Victims' Families Oppose Bus Depot On WTC Site

Some victims' family members are calling a plan to build an undergound parking garage on the World Trade Center site disrespectful.

The Coalition of 9/11 Families says the thought of buses parking on what they consider sacred ground is upsetting. They also say the plan is a security risk.

The design of architect Daniel Libeskind, which was selected last week, originally called for a memorial space that went down to bedrock, preserving the sunken “bathtub” of the site. But at the Port Authority’s request, the bottom was raised 40 feet to allow for an underground bus terminal to accommodate visitors.

Overall, most family members were satisfied by Libeksind’s design, which calls for a complex of angular buildings that includes the world’s tallest tower, with a spire of “vertical gardens.”
