Amtrak said it expected Acela Express and Northeast Corridor service to resume late this afternoon.

The first train to leave Penn Station for Boston was expected to depart at 5 p.m., according to Amtrak, while the first train to leave Boston for Penn Station was expected to depart at 4:10 p.m.

Northeast Corridor service was suspended between New York and Boston since early Sunday morning due to a freight train derailment near New Haven, Connecticut that is blocking the tracks.

Amtrak said that once service is restored, commuters should expect residual delays as trains pass through the New Haven area.

Passengers who already paid but chose not to travel because of the disruption can receive a refund or a voucher for future travel.
