The city is using some high-powered green technology to help clean the streets of Times Square.

The 30 new solar-powered waste and recycling stations manually compact garbage, giving them five times the capacity of a normal trash can.

The mayor said the stations will save money, be more environmentally friendly and better clean up the neighborhood that daily produces the most garbage in the city.

"It's good for taxpayers, and it's good for the city's air quality, and it's good for the people who come here every day, every night," Bloomberg said. "This is just one of the great places, one of the great turnarounds in New York City, and this is going to make it even better."

The project is part of the mayor's promise to double the city's recycling rate by 2017.

By year's end, the mayor said the city will have put 1,000 new recycling containers on streets around the five boroughs.
