Opening statements were heard Monday in the trial of a man accused of killing a psychotherapist with a meat cleaver in her Manhattan office five years ago.

It's prosecutors' second attempt at trying David Tarloff, who is schizophrenic.

A trial in 2010 was suspended when Tarloff started acting strangely and was declared unfit for court.

Kathryn Faughey was killed in February 2008.

Tarloff has said he wanted to rob her officemate to get money so he could take his mother out of a nursing home.

Tarloff's lawyers don't dispute that he attacked Faughey, but they say he didn't understand what he was doing was wrong.

Prosecutors say he was carrying out a carefully considered plan.
