It's official: U.S. Airways is merging with American Airlines to become the world's biggest air carrier.

The new airliner will maintain the American Airlines name, but it will be led by the current CEO of US Airways.

The deal is worth $11 billion, but it still has to be approved by a bankruptcy court, federal regulators and U.S. Airways shareholders.

American has been restructuring under bankruptcy protection since 2011.

Once the airlines are fully merged, American’s presence would grow at major East Coast airports, including LaGuardia.

The airlines will have a combined eight hubs.

U.S. Airways CEO Doug Parker says the airline plans to keep all of them, though some industry experts are casting doubt on whether that will be possible.
