WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A bipartisan group of federal lawmakers is looking to crack down on gun trafficking.

Members of the House of Representatives, including New York Rep. Carolyn Maloney, released a bill Tuesday that would make firearms trafficking a federal crime.

It would also create harsher penalties for those who buy guns for convicted felons.

"For too long, we have been handcuffing the wrong people," Maloney said. "We've made it very difficult for law enforcement to stop the flow of guns to criminals, and we've made it easy for criminals to get their hands on guns. With this bill, we start turning this around so that we can handcuff the real people, and those are the criminals."

The bill is the latest of several gun control measures proposed on Capitol Hill since the Connecticut school shooting in December.
