A downtown Manhattan firehouse hit hard by Hurricane Sandy is bulking up with some donated gym equipment.
Engine 4, Ladder 15 on South Street accepted fitness equipment and muscle-building supplements from several companies Tuesday morning.
When Sandy destroyed the station's garage, where the workout equipment was stored, firefighters lost an important part of what keeps them ready to respond to emergencies.
"Every day, we're walking up six, seven, eight flights. When the tones go off, we need to be ready. We have to get up the stairs quick, so it's really important that we stay in shape," said FDNY Firefighter Brian Collier.
"When you look at the history of this fire hall, it's pretty remarkable what they've been through, so we feel that we've made a good contribution and really helped out a fire hall that was in need," said Brent Coward of Iovate Health Services International.
The new equipment includes treadmills, dumbbells, and elliptical machines.
