Scientists hope to find out how exactly the dolphin that got trapped in the Gowanus Canal died.
The Riverhead Foundation said the dolphin's body was recovered Saturday.
A necropsy will be performed Sunday.
The dolphin died in the waters Friday, where it had been stuck for hours.
The animal had been flapping around, slamming itself up against the wall of the canal in an effort to break free.
Rescuers were hoping the dolphin would be able to free itself at high tide Friday night, but the animal died before then.
Recovery crews had to wait for better weather conditions before taking the dolphin's body out of the water.
