ALBANY - Hundreds of people gathered at the state capitol in Albany Saturday to protest the state's new gun laws.

Demonstrators were angry about the 13 provisions of the New York Safe Act and the quick manner in which it was passed earlier this week.

Bypassing a three-day review period, the governor put the bill to an immediate vote in the Assembly. It passed in the State Senate on Monday.

"The laws that were passed in the middle of the night, they're targeted against law-abiding gun owners," said one protester. "They should be targeted at criminals. And we should have tough laws go against mentally ill people, to get them in hospitals, to get them the treatment they need, to keep them off the streets and out of society."

Cuomo has said that the bill was pushed through quickly to avoid a buying spree of soon-to-be-illegal firearms and magazines.
