For some homeowners, Tuesday was the deadline to decide whether or not to demolish their homes that are beyond repair after Hurricane Sandy pummeled them. NY1's Jeanine Ramirez filed the following report.

Angelo DeAngelis took a walk around his house, or at least the parts that are still standing. But soon they won't be.

On Tuesday, DeAngelis made the decision to have his home demolished. The city will knock it down and FEMA will remove the debris at no cost to the DeAngelis family.

But they have to be there when it happens.

"I have to be present when they're going to do this," DeAngelis said. "I don't know if my wife or my son will make it. But we are to be here and say goodbye. Like a funeral."

The DeAngelis family lived at there home for 31 years before Sandy hit. They have created a YouTube video of memories from their home along with footage from Oct. 29 -- the day Sandy washed it all away.

The video asks for help to rebuild. They received no insurance money. They're also reaching out to other homeowners who had their houses deemed unsafe and red tagged by the city. They've started a Facebook group called "Red Tagged Houses of New York."

"We're hoping to get everybody that has a red tag and maybe we can have some sort of meeting or start a petition, which my husband has started, in order to get funds for people just to rebuild their homes and just get back to their normal lives," Danielle DeAngelis said.

At first the DeAngelis family didn't want to have their house demolished -- they let the original Dec. 31 deadline pass. But in the new year, they changed their minds.

"I hope I can rebuild," Angelo said. "If if goes bad, then I have to sell a vacant lot."

All six who shared the house have been living with relatives for nearly three months now.

They still have to find a house to live in while they decide whether to rebuild or move on.
