The New York City Police Department is going high-tech to crack down on prescription drug thefts.
In a speech he's delivering today in California, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly is expected to unveil a plan to put GPS devices in fake pill bottles.
Pharmacists would hide them on store shelves along with their real supplies.
If there's a robbery or burglary, investigators could track down the thieves by locating the missing bottles.
In his prepared remarks, Kelly says the plan follows some high-profile crimes involving prescription drugs, including a deadly pharmacy holdup on Long Island in 2011.
There have been similar attempts to track prescription drugs on a limited basis but the NYPD claims this would be the first widespread effort.
