State lawmakers introduced a bill Friday to protect homeowners from corrupt practices by insurance companies.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver wants to enact the Homeowners Bill of Rights, which would tighten procedures by insurance companies in the wake of disasters like Sandy.

Insurers would be required to provide easy-to-understand disclosure notices and coverage details.

A second bill would reduce the amount of time it takes insurance companies to respond to claims.

If a claim is accepted, it would need to be paid within three business days.

The state Assembly Insurance Committee is also planning to hold public hearings to examine the response of these companies following the hurricane.
