New York saw snow Saturday as a winter storm passed through the area.

Manhattan and the Bronx were expected to get the worst of the winter weather.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for the five boroughs until 6 a.m. Sunday.

As of noon Saturday, precipitation began as snow across most of the city, with some extreme eastern sections getting rain. Precipitation shifted over to mostly rain in the afternoon but was expected to switch back to snow by Saturday evening.

Higher snow totals were projected for northern parts of the city.

With snow in the forecast for much of the day, the New York City Department of Sanitation issued a snow alert.

365 salt spreaders were loaded and trucks were outfitted with plows.

Extra personnel were also on stand by.

The MTA also canceled most planned weekend maintenance work. Only construction affecting the 7, A and C lines went on as scheduled.

People NY1 spoke with said this weather is nothing to be scared of, especially in the wake of the hurricane.

"No, I don't worry about it," said one resident. "I worry about Sandy storm, and I hope this will be just a conclusion to a bad year with a snowstorm, that's all. We had so many bad breaks in our community."

"Really, it's not much you can do about an inch of snow when you just dealt with eight feet of water," said another. "Not much you can do about it."

Many Staten Island residents headed to local hardware and supply stores to stock up on salt and shovels ahead of Saturday's storm.

They said they wanted to be ready in case more snow fell than predicted.

"I bought three bags of rock salt, and some de-icer for my car, and some batteries, just in case we lose power," said Gene Lucarini, a New Dorp Beach resident.

"Shovels are oiled up," said Hank Wakey, a Great Kills resident. "I got the ice melt ready to go."

Since September, the city has received about five inches of snow.
