National Rifle Association Vice President Wayne LaPierre and Senator Charles Schumer squared off on gun control on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday, more than a week after the Newtown school shooting.

LaPierre said stricter gun laws are not the solution to gun violence, and continued to pitched the idea he first described on Friday of training and arming security guards and putting them in every school in the country.

"What will make every mom and dad feel better, when they drop their kid off at school in January, is if we have a police officer in that school, a good guy," LaPierre said.

Schumer said LaPierre was just playing the blame game on Friday.

"Movies, the media, President Obama, gun-free school zones, you name it, video games, he blames them," said Schumer. "Now, trying to prevent shootings in school without talking about guns is like trying to prevent lung cancer without talking about cigarettes."

LaPierre added that prosecuting more violent criminals and an improved mental health care system would also reduce gun violence.

Schumer said LaPierre's extremist views will actually help get stricter gun-control laws passed.
