The New York City Fire Department reportedly wants groups of active and retired firefighters to pay up for the right to use the letters "FDNY."

The New York Post says the fire department is demanding that dozens of fraternal groups who use the letters pay a $100 fee and file detailed applications.

After filling out the forms and paying the fee, the groups would become "affiliated organizations," and would have to renew every three years.

It is not clear if the groups would have to pay another $100 to renew.

The Post says the new policy is aimed at outsiders who look to profit off of city-owned trademarks like "FDNY.”

Some groups are complaining about the move, saying they have been around long enough that the department should know who they are.
