Legislation to provide $60 billion in funding for states impacted by Hurricane Sandy moved an important step forward towards passage in the Senate Friday.

The Senate voted Friday to end debate on the relief bill, allowing it to be voted on by the full U.S. Senate.

Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, along with New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez, said they have the votes to push their storm aid package through the Senate.

"To the people of New York, who I know are still suffering, for the homeowners who lost their homes, to the small businesses who are struggling to survive, to our communities that have lost so much, this aid will be a real shot in the arm for you," Schumer said. "This aid will allow New York to rebuild bigger and better than ever."

"We are on our way to helping you, lift you up, reopen your business, get you back in your home and help rebuild communities," Menendez said.

The bill faces a tough battle on the floor of the House, however.

Schumer is urging Congressional Republicans to put aside partisan politics and bring the bill to the president's desk.
